Baptisia 'Carolina Moonlight' - False Indigo
.
Common name: False Indigo
Family: Fabaceae (Pea Family)
Distribution: North America
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
Life form: Perennial plant
Comments: Celebrated for its showy yellow flowers, attractiveness to butterflies and drought tolerance, false indigo is a star in the spring. This 3 to 4 feet tall, rounded perennial sends up lupine-like flowers in the spring. The green inflated seed pods eventually turn charcoal black providing another ornamental element. Once established, the plant has an extensive root system that keeps it low maintenance but also means it should be left in place.
